In Memorium

Robbie Marlow

NAUI & SSI Instructor

Last year the Rum Runner family lost our dear friend Robbie.

Robbie graduated Charleston Southern University (BS) and The Medical University of South Carolina (BSN). He was employed by Boston Scientific as a Pacemaker sales Representative.
Originally from the Charleston area, he received his first dive Certificate in 1978. Kids and career came along creating a break from diving. Getting re-freshened and with his son certified to dive, Robbie once again had the exploration bug and it was nonstop from there.
Robbie received his SSI Instructor in 2013 and then crossed over as a Naui Instructor to be dually affiliated in Dec of 2015.
Robbie loved to teach and loved SCUBA so naturally it had to come together!

He will be missed by all.

Rest in Peace

Tommy Pate

Tommy graduated from NC State in 1982 and has worked as a financial planner ever since.  He received his first certification from Padi as a diver for Edgecombe County EMS in 1988.  Following a 15 year year hiatus he "rediscovered" diving with his son George and began their training anew with Rum Runner in 2007.  Tommy and George both received their Master Certificate with NAUI in 2013 with Tommy also receiving his Divemaster Certification that same year.  He completed his SSI Instructor certification in December of 2013.

A 25 year veteran of the fire and EMS service, Tommy enjoys wreck diving, night diving and "critter identification.

Steve Benson

Performance Freediving International Instructor

Steve took his first free diving course in 2010 with Performance Freediving’s world class instructors Ren and Ashley Chapman.  In his first class, Steve’s breath hold was 6 minutes 15 seconds, and he reached a depth of 20 meters. He was hooked.

He became a member of an extended family he affectionately calls his “water tribe” when he competed for the first time in 2012 at Deja Blue Grand Cayman. There he completed a personal best 60 meter dive, and also broke the US national static breath-hold record, setting a new mark at 7 minutes 43 seconds. His record still stands.  He has since competed in the 2013 Caribbean Cup in Roatan, Honduras, and Deja Blue Curacao where he placed third overall.

Steve grew up about as far from the ocean as you can get, in Colorado, but always had a love of the water. He started scuba diving in 1989, and can’t remember a time in his life when he didn’t have a mask and fins. Steve spent 4 years in the US Navy, where he also served in Desert Storm.  Steve worked his way through college earning a bachelor of fine arts degree and subsequently a Master of Science.

In his day job, Steve is a Physician’s Assistant with Eastern Urology, in Greenville, NC. He is a father of two, and is an accomplished cyclist, both on the trail and on the road.
